About

Generations of Expertise

Shwet is part of the Choudhari family business. Marble quarry owners and suppliers, our lineage can be traced back to the seventeenth century. Most notably, Fazal Ji supplied Makrana marble and artisans during the construction of the Taj Mahal. Bux Ji, his descendent, supplied marble for the Victoria Memorial in Kolkata.

Following the memorial’s completion in the 1920s, the title Choudhari was given to our family by the British. In the 1930s, the business became H.S.Hussain Bux Fazal Ji, the name it is known by today. In honor of our centuries-long connection with this precious stone, we are actively engaged in protecting its unique legacy by creating home mandir suitable for Hindu contemporary life globally. Owning the mines ensures that every item is created from marble of the most outstanding quality, and is rooted in the traditions of our workshop, which dates back hundreds of years.

A Living Tradition

Such fine quality marble demands a very high caliber of artist. Makrana’s master craftsmen draw out the marble’s translucent beauty in the manner of those who came before them. We have created three brands to carry their skills into the future: Qissa, which focuses on privately commissioned sculptures; Ustaji, which offers marble handicraft items; and Shwet, which creates compact home mandir of exceptional standard.

These highly skilled artists and designers have access to our business’s remarkable historic workshop, which hosts an abundance of designs and practical notes dating back centuries. Their imagination is fired by the ingenuity of those who worked before them. The smallest detail in each mandir – such as a lotus pattern, mandala wheel, peacock feather, or pillar design – is crafted using techniques refined over generations. Shwet is part of a living history, making beauty accessible to customers around the world.

Devotional Art

The literal translation of shwet is white, a color associated with equilibrium in Hinduism. It holds the seven colors of the spectrum within it, and is itself created from the balance of these colors. For this reason, white radiates calmness, serenity and tranquility. It harmonizes with everything around it.

Shwet is therefore both the name of the brand, and everything it aspires to be. As the Shilpa Shastras teach, art is centered around equilibrium, which is the source of beauty. It is the guiding light of all of us who work here.

Our logo, a beautiful white peacock, expresses this. Its gaze is set to the north east, contemplating the Vastu of the temple, while its feet are placed inside the auspicious chokhat. The lamp-like Hindi लौ symbolizes both the flame of the law and the lamps integral to puja ritual.

Devotion to Art

Makrana’s artisans understand that God is in the details. Their delicate skill draws out the marble’s ethereal sheen, bringing divine grace into the home. They seek perfection in every task they carry out, discreet in their workings, yet bold in honoring the wisdom of ages.

Their rituals of craftsmanship echo the rituals of worship, which are themselves an art form perfected over thousands of years. Through dedication, an oasis of tranquility spreads through the mandir, the home and the wider world.

This is the essence of Makrana, and of Shwet.
