Kailash

Shikhara tower | Elephant plinth | Floral border tiers | Arched niche

Kailash is the sacred mountain the abode of Shiva and it earns that name through form alone. A ribbed shikhara tower rises above a pyramidal stepped structure of considerable presence, its form drawn from the Nagara tradition the great towered temple architecture that has defined sacred space across northern India for over a thousand years.

Each tier of the plinth carries a running border of carved floral vine. At the base of the central tier, a small carved elephant stands in quiet sentinel Ganesha's blessing, invoked before all worship. The arched inner niche is deep and protected on all sides by the ascending mass of marble above it. The overall silhouette of Kailash is one of the most architecturally complete in the Griha collection: the grammar of temple architecture distilled into a form that is compact and entirely manageable.

Kailash stands on any surface and needs nothing around it to be what it is. For a home where the puja space is understood as sacred architecture in miniature, there is no other piece quite like it.
